Facebook is making us sad and unhealthy, claims new study

Stop checking your Facebook profile all the time, it could be making you unhappy and unhealthy.  That’s according to a new study from Yale University and University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Apparently people who access the social network more often are not as happy and healthy as the rest of us who choose to use it sporadically.  Researchers studied the Facebook use and mental health of 5,208 volunteers from 2013 to 2015.  They did this by giving them surveys and also speaking to them.

After analysing the data they found increased use of Facebook was ‘tightly linked to compromised social, physical, and psychological health.’  Further mining of the results revealed if you were updating your profile or liking posts more than average you were more likely to present with mental health issues.   (*Source: METRO Sunday 28 May 2017)

The report, which appeared in the American Journal of Epidemiology, was led by UCSD’s assistant professor of public health Holly Shakya and Yale’s Nicholas Christakis, who is director of the university’s Human Nature Lab.

Your current circumstances don’t determine where you are headed, they only determine where you need to start!

“Start now.  Start where you are.  Start with fear.  Start with pain.  Start with doubt.  Start with hands shaking.  Start with voice trembling but start.  Start and don’t stop.  Start where you are, with what you have.  Just… start.” ― Ijeoma Umebinyuo
